Choking or swallowing foreign objects

Choking or swallowing foreign objects

It is not unusual for a puppy to try to eat things he shouldn’t - toys, bones, a piece of a glove, and other small things - which can become lodged in the oesophagus or swallowed. If you can get to the veterinarian immediately, so much the better. He can look inside with an endoscope and see exactly what has been swallowed and where it is lodged. Surgery may be necessary.

If help is not available and the dog has swallowed a foreign object, feed soft food such as bread and milk, then give an emetic. The chances are that the dog will vomit the food and bring up the object at the same time. If the object is lodged deep in the throat, open the mouth and try to retrieve it with the fingers or long-nosed pliers. If you cannot try the Helmlich maneuver : lay the dog on his side then place the palms of your hands ( one on top of the other ) on his abdomen just below the rib cage press into the abdomen with a sharp upward thrust to expel the object.
