Journey’s end. It comes no matter how much we would like the journey to continue. The life of your pet seems to have been short, all the more because it has been so happy. 

Let the veterinarian decide when the time has come to say good-bye he can decide better than you, for he will be scientific rather than emotional. Veterinarians no longer say “ put him out of the way”, because they do not know what else to do. Better trained now, they are lengthening life and easing pain more certainly and humanely than ever before. 

Even so, there comes a time when the penalties of age pile up and nothing remains but to put the suffers to sleep. Euthanasia as practiced today does exactly that. The dog literally goes to sleep before the lethal dose takes effect. When the needle is administered, there is no pain, no struggle, and no knowledge of what is happening. It is all so calm and quiet that you can hold the dog right in your arms. He sees it fair game and every time he scents one in season off he goes.
