Seizures or fits

Seizures or fits

Seizures, or involuntary paroxysmal disturbances of brain function characterized by violent spasms or contractions of muscles, are common among many breeds of dogs. They may result from a variety of causes, including hereditary predisposition, epilepsy, hypoglycemia, hypocalcemia, and exposure to certain drugs and poisons.

An attack may last for only a few moments as the dog becomes restless, shakes, stiffens, stares glassy-eyed, chomps his jaws, and froths at the mouth. Or he may stagger and roll over on his side as his legs continue to contract, lose control of his bladder or bowels and become unconscious. Remove the sufferer to a quiet, semi dark room or place him in a crate where he can’t injure himself. After the seizure the dog can exhibit a number of behavioural changes, including confusion, depression, and fatigue.

Repeated or prolonged seizures should be considered a serious emergency requiring immediate veterinary attention. Whether the seizure is mild or severe, however, it should be followed by a complete physical checkup and perhaps a neurological evolution. Anticonvulsants are often prescribed.
