Basset Hound 50 pounds. Gentle, devoted animal. Good family pet. Does well in city, stubborn, so is difficult to train. 

Beagle 20-30 pounds. Good indoor and outdoor dog. Great for a family. Barks a lot. Stubborn, so is difficult to train.

Dachshund 18-20 pounds. Better with adults than children. Good house pet. Affectionate. Prone to back problems.

HERDING DOGS

Collie 50-75 pounds. Excellent family pet. Somewhat independent. Great with children. Requires regular grooming.

German Shepherd 60-85 pounds. Hardy. Intelligent. Good family pet. Good with children. Used as guide dog for the blind.

Old English Sheepdog 75-90 pounds. Excellent house dog but needs exercise. Requires considerable grooming and sheds heavily. 

Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie) 16 pounds. Good in limited space. Obedient. Good with children. Demands affection. Needs grooming.

WORKING DOGS

Akita 80-100 pounds. Very affectionate family dog. May be aggressive toward other dogs.

Alaskan Malamute 50-90 pounds. Great strength. Aggressive with other dogs. Not tolerant of young children. Requires exercise and regular grooming. Barks seldom. Very clean.

Boxer 60-80 pounds. Excellent family pet. Affectionate and playful. Needs plenty of exercise. Smooth, short-haired coat.

Doberman Pinscher 60-75 pounds. Good watch dog. Excellent family pet. Easy to train with firm discipline. Often is a one-owner dog; i.e., loyal to one family member.

Great Dane 120-150 pounds. Good family dog. Affectionate. Good with children. Aggressive if threatened. Needs exercise.

Newfoundland 150 pounds. Great family pet. Good with children. One of the sweetest-tempered of the large breeds. Intelligent. Fast learner.

Rottweiler 50-90 pounds. Great protection dog with superb intelligence. May be aggressive toward people.

Siberian Husky 35-60 pounds. Gentle, friendly, and good with children. Needs lots of outdoor exercise. Sheds heavily.
